In its price list of December 28, 1936, Stanley introduced a new level for use by mechanics, inspectors, householders, and hobbyists. Called a torpedo level, it was shaped similar to a submarine with tapered ends on both sides, making it very useful in close quarters and tight spaces. They are traditionally 9 inches long for handy, everyday use where a long level isn't needed.

This level is from Johnson located in Mequon, Wisconsin. The company was founded in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1947 by George A. Johnson and they continue to manufacture their levels in America.
