In the 1970s, Lynn and Joel Rapp owned a plant shop located on Melrose Avenue called Mother Earth’s Boutique. The shop doubled as a counterculture hangout. Because they quit their jobs and decided to open a plant store, they were not professionals or experts and wanted to write a friendly, fun book to show and encourage others that plants can be something everyone can get into, too.
In the foreword, the Rapps state, "At Mother Earth we are neither botanists nor certified plant horticulturists. We are just ordinary people who have had long and practical experience raising house plants and after having tried and failed and finally succeeded with virtually every plant that can be grown successfully indoors, we would like to share it all with everybody.
Another fun fact: When you bought your potted houseplant at this shop, you would receive a free copy of the album with your purchase, full of music to play for it and help it grow, like a sonic fertilizer! That album was the one and only cult classic Plantasia.
